8.2.4 Opioid-overuse headache

Diagnostic criteria:
A. Headache fulfilling criteria for 8.2 Medication-overuse headache
B. Regular intake of one or more opioids1 on ≥10 days per month for >3 months.

1. The opioid(s) will usually be specified in parenthesis.

Prospective studies indicate that patients overusing opioids have the highest relapse rate after withdrawal treatment.

A patient who fulfils the criteria for 8.2.4 Opioid-overuse headache (or one of its subtypes) and has regularly used or overused other drug(s) for the acute or symptomatic treatment of headache for more than three months should be given all other applicable codes.
